A review of Bed Bugs in Urmston, Davyhulme and Flixton in 2010

April 22nd, 2010

One of the most hated and misunderstood pests known to mankind is the bed bug C lectularius. Many of us dropped off to sleep at night as children with the words of our elders in our ears “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite”

Bed Bugs probably started to predate on mankind at about the time we started sleeping in, the bat bugs Cimex pilosellus and Cimex pipistrella largely feed on bats and it is probable that bat feeding species of bug evolved to predate on the blood of human beings when our ancestors began sleeping in bat infested caves.

Up to the invention of DDT in the early 20th century bed bugs were common pests in most poor quality homes.

The later half of the twentieth century saw pest control operatives reporting very few bed bug problems indeed, their presence being usually restricted to cheap holiday camps and student lodgings etc.

Most people mistake dust mites, which can’t be seen by to the unaided eye, with bed bugs which most certainly are.

Adult bedbugs are reddish, about a a few milemetres in size and very swollen after dining on human blood.

Lacking a suitable human meal to feed on they can stay dormant for periods of up to 18 months.

The initial signs of a bed bug problems are oftenspots of blood on sheets and on the seems of mattresses and many people can react extremely badly to bed bug bites.

The early 21st century has seen bed bug reports expanding across the whole globe, the cheap availability of international travel and economic migration have both been cited as reasons for the comeback.

What is definite is that that are now staging a real comeback not only in low quality homes but high class hotels, schools and even hospitals.

A single away in an infested bed is all it takes, they hide in your suitcases or bags. Pest control operatives are also now reporting cases of transport related bed bug infestations on tubes, trains and buses so a simple journey home on an infested tube or train can be enough to bring the infestation to your own home.

They are an tricky pest to deal with as contrary to popular notion they do not just hide in beds. They infest any nook and cranny conveniently close to a sleeping person, beds, electrical sockets, televisions, bed-side telephones etc and clearing them is both tricky and time consuming. They have even been revealed found living under the toe-nails of infirm people and in the creases of flesh of very over-weight people.

Bed bugs are not a pest that can be dealt with by an amateur and a pest control professional will almost certainly be needed.
