Ant Problems in Northwich, Middlewich and Weaverham.

May 13th, 2010

Ants in the house are the scourge of many houses in summer leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will herald

Only the unfortunates who have suffered it will realise the true horror of flying ants in their houses.

Having an infestation of plain old wingless ants is bad enough but when they enter their annual mating phase the position can become intolerable.

Ants often form colonies under the floors and in the wall cavities of our houses and these colonies will live for many years to come if left untreated and become progressively more persistent as the years go on.

Our homes are warm and dry and make the ideal places for a thriving ant colony; even solid hard floor is not a problem to and ant colony.

Our house heating systems maintains their metabolism even in the colder months when they are not active outdoors and my earliest ant job was on my birthday, which is in January!

Ants prefer a sandy soil and there are lots of areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which produce more ant callouts than other areas, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as hot ant areas.

Unfortunately it is during their mating time that they are most irksome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this often is pretty often around the third or fourth week in July.

Ants mate on the wing and around mid-summer the colony produces winged immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst flying. Many thousands of these flying ants are produced per colony and nests tend to synchronise their release in order to mate with ants from other nests.

Normally this process starts after a couple of days of hot, dry weather and will typically last for about seven to ten although smaller releases will carry on throughout most of the summertime.

Unfortunately when the nest is located under the floor of the home the results can be dreadful, literally thousands of winged ants are released into the lower rooms, aiming for windows as they make for the light.

This can be very distressing for some people leading to severe emotional upset to the level that people learn to fear the summertime and have actually sold their homes to escape the plague of ants which they know will inevitably come each summer.

The wet summers of 2007, 2008 & 2009 has meant that ant problems were down on the preceding but ants apparently have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly good year for them.

A lot of people who have this problem try for DIY solutions with products from local stores etc but mostly these efforts do not succeed as they are not getting to the heart of the infestation which is the colony itself, hidden away safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.

Luckily for a lot of people the answer.

At Harrier Pest Prevention (subject to local site) we are able to cure this problem and issue an extendable 3 year guarantee.

The treatment which is done mostly from the exterior of the dwelling, is totally safe for animals and children and produces no smell, involves drilling small holes into the cavity walls of the house, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.

This forms an uncrossable barrier over which the ants cannot go and along with a precautionary spray of the inside (if deemed necessary) will slowly bring the infestation to its end.

The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter stay open so it is a simple matter of topping up the cavities every three years to extend the effectiveness of the guarantee in three year periods.

This treatment is best done out in the early spring however it can be done all year round.

As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the usual price until May 30 2010. Whilst we usually cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are willing to travel further afield but this will be at extra cost.
