Guide to Cala Bona on the Balearic Island of Majorca

June 29th, 2010

Cala Bona and the larger Cala Millor are situated on the east coast of the Baleric island of Majorca. The twin resorts are just a 5 minute taxi fare or a 20 minute walk if you prefer the exercise. A lot destinations in Majorca are dominated by either English or German tourists. Cala Bona is very much a British resort while Cala Millor is a little unusual as a mixed resort where both British and German tourists flock to in numbers. Cala Bona in Majorca is definitely the quieter of the two towns making it ideal for young families. In Cala Bona most of the entertainment is based in local hotels. Cala Bona is certainly not for anyone looking to go on a pub crawl but Cala Millor is the place for night life and as of course is only a 5 minute taxi trip or a 20 minute walk away.

Cala Bona has developed from a tiny traditional fishing village into an important resort on Majorca’s quieter east coast. The original character of Cala Bona is still visible as Cala Bona features a number of the original narrow streets. The harbour is the liveliest part of the resort of Cala Bona. The harbour has been refurbished recently and now offers a selection of harbourside cafes, watering holes and eateries. Most of the local tourist excursions are available at the harbour.

Cala Bona offers a number of smallish sandy beaches sheltered between man made rocky breakwaters forming calm, sheltered lagoons ideal for swimming and paddling in relative safety. In the last few years these lagoons seem to have formed a trap for the local seaweed to build up both in the water and on the beach. Son Severa council have been actively managing this problem by regular removal of the seaweed to avoid a build up. Cala Bona’s beaches are now probably as good as they have ever been because of thanks to the local council.

Bus transport from Palma de Mallorca airport usually takes a couple of hours to either Cala Bona or Cala Millor. Car rental in Cala Bona or from Palma de Mallorca (PMI) airport is cost effective by comparison with many other hotspots. If you intend to rent a car from Palma it is a good idea to buy some maps of Majorca before leaving.
