Miniature Breed Dog Crate Training

April 2nd, 2010

The reason why dog lovers hold this preconceived view that small breed pups are more problematic to train than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to figure out. Small dog training should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is in no way different from training a puppy of any other sized breed. Although training any puppy will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, most all other aspects remain similar, and the technique to training the dog should be the same, regardless its size.

Having said that, I will allow myself to be corrected here, and accept that small dog training may present issues in two facets, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy Crate Training. Nevertheless, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.

If a smaller breed puppy dog is aggressive and poses a training problem, or if a tiny breed puppy dog cannot be toilet trained or poses challenges in being potty trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us investigate how and why.

Aggression.

Tiny dogs are preferred because they are sweet, they are like toy characters. Owners delight in having their pet sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the complication gets going. The innate aggressive character of the dog, is to take ownership over its space, its food, even its owner; all pups desire to be the alpha dog.

It is the hostile streak in the canine animal that provokes it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, especially when there are a number of persons present in the room.

This is a outright act of hostility. Instead of reprimanding the animal, every owner bar no one, would cuddle the pup, notwithstanding that it jumped on to their lap uninvited, promoting the aggressive streak in the puppy. By doing this the owner has seconded the puppy’s basic instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and snapping at a a bigger size dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is regarded as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is larger. Most owners cuddle the pup instead of scolding it, when it stands this aggression towards a larger dog.

The above are but instances as to why small pet dogs are aggressive, and positively not because small dog training is very difficult.

Toilet Training

Owners have a propensity to carry their small pets around where ever they go, even when they are at home and that makes it plain difficult to toilet train them

It comes natural to the owners of small dogs to carry the animal to the spot where the pup should go to the bathroom and then carry it back into the house.

It is this pattern of carrying the dog to the outdoors to poop that is the origin of all complications. In addition, because the pup is by and large carried around so often it has no way of it  indicating to or alerting the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.

Small dog training starts off with treating  the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be moved to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their small sized dogs they would have no troubles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most interesting part of puppy training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
