Soap Making: Why It Is Useful

April 19th, 2010

As we know, soaps are not just instruments for cleaning but also serve as a beautification to make the outlook of your bathroom more defined that is why soap making is necessary. It is boring and dull to use the same bar of soap for your body and also use it as a means to decorate your bathroom.

Prior to starting the soap making, the major ingredients that you should have are fats and lye. The main component of soaps is fat and it is responsible for the distinctive uniqueness of the soap making it hard or soft; or making it mild to the skin or produces a good lather. Lye, on the other hand, is primarily used for hydrolyzing the fat and transforming it into soap while the other ingredients are for adding unique properties to the soap: other ingredients that are added may include dyes used to color the soap and fragrance oils used to give it a different scent.

As soap making is concerned, the alteration of fats to soap can be done through a cold or hot process. The hot process is almost a like but the fat will be heated before incorporating it with the lye water. The combination is then further heated for two hours prior to ready for use. The cold process is known to create longer lasting soap. The cold process involves adding of the fat into a formerly prepared lye water mixture. This is mixed and poured into melts that have been soaked into cold water.

It is simple to do soap making although you need to be wary in doing so, since lye is a bit hazardous to the health. Keep in mind the substance lye can be hazardous to one’s health. Since it is a dangerous ingredient, you need extra caution when using it for the soap mixture. Be sure to avoid making direct contact with the substance, especially with your bare hands, since it can cause grave injuries due to it being acidic in nature. Combining water with lye will release fumes and if inhaled, can also be detrimental to your health.

If you are looking for a fun and creative hobby, then soap making is a good hobby to think about. Once you are done preparing your soap, you can add more ingredients to it create a completely unique bar of soap with a distinctive smell and color. You are also not limited to bar shapes since you can design them to become any shape you want, from animals to food shapes. And you can thoroughly customize it by putting in different colors. Another thing you can play around with is the oils that you put into the soap which in turn will let it have a unique and wonderful fragrance.
