Two Book Stand Designs

March 9th, 2010

A book stand is a valuable accessory for every true lover of books. Currently marketed types range from straight forward wire devices such as the Fold’N'Stow that holds a book at variable angles on any flat surface, to the infinitely more elaborate LEVO Bookholder which secures your book or other reading material in either a floor standing design or a clamp-on model that easily clamps to just about any table, desk, or counter top. Many book stand models function well with hardcovers, but they also can function quite nicely with paperbacks mounted in book holders such as an OpenPage.

The Fold’N'Stow is among the least expensive of book stands. It folds virtually flat and comes with it’s own plastic pouch designed for use in a three ring binder. It may be used on a counter top for cookbooks, or the top of your desk, table, workstation, bench, etc. Wire arms with page holders extend out from the back plane to secure your book open, and, by adjusting how far apart the arms are, smaller and larger books are readily accommodated. The back of the stand has horizontal pieces that can be raised or lowered to vary the angle at which the book is held relative the substrate.

The LEVO’s most popular book stand is the LEVO floor standing model, which includes a weighted rolling base for easy movement just about anywhere. Wherever you choose to put it, it can hold your book in virtually any position. With a bookboard which can be moved into virtually any position, and coupled with book mounting straps that will securely hold your book or other reading material, even in an inverted position, the LEVO allows for totally hand-free reading just about anywhere.

The LEVO Clamp-on design is just as handy as its floor standing sibling, but features a clamp that safely attaches to any desk, table, counter top, work bench or other flat surface up to 2 inches thick, and offers identical movements as the floor model, without the range of vertical telescoping movements. By keeping your reading materials off the surface to which it is secured, the clamp on model saves the weight and expense of the weighted floor base while conserving work space, since neither your book nor your book holder rest on the working surface.

Even though there are other book stand designs now available, the Fold’N'Stow and LEVO book stands have withstood the test of time and hold up well to long term use.
